Bennett and Her Baby Teeth

For years Bennett was envious that her friends were all losing her baby teeth, and she wasn't.  It wasn't until the second grade that her teeth finally started getting loose.  Unfortunately, she couldn't go about it like a typical child.  She required her Daddy's or her dentist's help in yanking them out.  Here we are a year later, and not much has changed.  So far she has lost 6 teeth....3 of which were pulled out by Steve, the other half by her dentist.

Her most recent visit was initiated by us because she began complaining of pain.  As you can see in the first picture, two of her permanent teeth began growing in behind two of her baby teeth.  Usually the permanent teeth eat away at the baby teeth roots, making them loose and eventually falling out.  However these two teeth were growing in behind them, so her dentist was worried that it may take too long and mess up her smile more in the process.  Therefore, he recommended that they come out (Bennett was thrilled).

Big smile from my girl with 2 less teeth!

Of course she was over the moon, and couldn't wait to leave her baby teeth out for the tooth fairy.  Thank goodness for her the extra nice tooth fairy who left her a $5 for the two teeth.

AL vs Charleston Southern Buccaneers

Bennett LOVES SaySay!!
The first Saturday of the week long Thanksgiving break proved to be a fun one for the kids!  Bennett, Preston and Steve attended their first Alabama game of the season.  Now don't get me wrong, the kids love to go tailgate in Tuscaloosa, but they have asked to go to a game since their first two years ago.  Thankfully it was a beautiful fall day, so they had a blast in Tuscaloosa!  Preston threw the football with anyone that was willing to toss it back...Papa, Louis, Steve, the father of the Catholic church there and any stranger near the tailgate.  They got ice cream from the truck that drove by, mingled with Sara and her friends and then went into the game early to soak it all in.

As to be expected, it was a blowout game.  However, that didn't stop them from staying there to cheer them on for the entire game.

Rammer Jammer!!  RTR!

Though Walker and I weren't in t-town, we didn't miss out on any fun.  He loved having his mama all to himself all day long.  We went for a walk, played in the backyard, and had plenty of snuggle time!

Grandpal's Day 2015

In the SCE new courtyard and garden
As always, Grandpal's Day fell the Friday before Thanksgiving break.  And once again Steve's parents attended to visit the kid's classrooms, see the artwork they have been working on, take a tour of Shades Cahaba (for the 4th year in a row) and just be there for the kids.  All parties had fun, and it was a warm sunny day.  Since I volunteered for a couple of hours, I checked out Bennett after her festivities with them.  And once Preston finished, they checked him out of school early so both kids could kick off their week long Thanksgiving break!

Thanks to Mimi and Papa for participating in a special day for the kids.

Veteran's Day

Every year the children are out of school on Veteran's Day.  Since they have been learning about the importance of the holiday and it was a beautiful day....I decided to take the kids to the Birmingham Veteran's Day parade.

If you can believe it, it is the oldest and longest parade in the country!  Sixty-eight years ago Birmingham became the first city in America to observe Veterans Day.  World War II veteran Raymond Weeks, the organizer of the original 1947 parade, is even somewhat responsible for the fact that we have a National Veterans Day, a day that honors all veterans of all wars, instead of its precursor, Armistice Day, which marked the end of World War I.

Weeks organized his event and called it National Veterans Day. By 1954, the name National Veterans Day was adopted throughout the country and Congress changed Armistice Day to Veterans Day.

The parade is a BIG deal in Birmingham, and we totally underestimated the parking.  We drove around for over 30 minutes trying to find a spot, before we finally illegally parked in some grass field.  We walked several blocks and caught the parade mid stream.  We stood and watched it for over 2 hours, and it was still going on when we left.  After hearing there were almost 5000 participants in the parade, I now know why.

The kids and their friends made cute signs and had fun people watching.  But after a couple of hours, they were ready to move on.  It was fun to experience a piece of history, especially with friends.

Our Little Swimmers are Getting Faster!!

heat winner!!
This Fall after summer swim ended, we moved the children over to a new swim league.  Though the Birmingham Swim League helped them build endurance, we felt that they needed more individual attention with stroke, diving and technique.  We decided on Magic City Aquatic League, which practices at Samford under Coach Cal.  He has been coaching children for over 20 years, so we hoped that the move would be beneficial.

The kids were hesitant at first, and actually disliked practices because he was pushing them harder than their previous coach.  But after they both tried new events and improved with the events that they were accustomed to swimming - I think they started to see the benefits.  Unfortunately Steve was away hunting during their first big meet with MCAL, but I was SUPER proud of them!!

It was a long weekend (arriving at 7:30 and not leaving until after noon both days), but with them each swimming 8 events, the meet went by fairly quickly for everyone but Walker.  Poor guy was drug along on Saturday and was bored within the first 30 minutes.  It was super hot, there was nothing for him to do except get pushed around in his stroller.  I guess after several hours of extreme boredom, he just caved and took a nap.  Thankfully, his Mimi and Papa kept him on Sunday.
heat winner too!
